Choosing your Survival Gear
Taking some time to go hiking out there is always a fun and interesting time. You will have so many chances to have fun. But you shall also be exposed to so much danger out there. Taking steps to go prepared is the sensible thing to do. When you are so far away from civilization, you need to have survival gear that will help you cope with the situation. As long as you are out there, there are some items you cannot miss in your survival gear package.
You cannot miss a means to communicate your whereabouts, such as a mobile phone or radio. The phone is best when it has a full charge and is within a network area. This is also a good time to have a GPS unit. Its advantage is that you can use it at any location of the world to tell your bearings.
You cannot miss to have a knife. They are more convenient to carry and still function well when you need to cook or build something.
A first aid kit also comes in handy when you need to fix a minor injury. This is what will keep your injuries from worsening until you get the right medical attention.
It is important to carry some water. People tend to focus on packing other things that they forget how important it is to have water while you are out there.
It is water that shall help you avoid dehydration and heat stroke. You cannot forget about food which should ideally not be perishable. It should be in an appropriate packaging which allows you to keep using it without spoiling the rest of your stock.
You also need some material you can use to build a shelter. A knife alone will not be enough. This will be how you kept yourself dry and protected if it begins to rain or snow.
You should ideally be dressed in layers of clothes. The thin layers are ideal when you are moving in a hot area or time of day. The thick layers work best when it gets cold, or at night. You also need clothing that can repel the rain, like caps and hats. IT is easier to stay comfortable in whatever weather when you have layered clothing.
You need to think of the type of footwear you shall have on while out there. If you will be going for long distances, you should make sure your feet are not in uncomfortable shoes all the way. You will especially need comfortable shoes if you happen to get lost and thus spend longer out there than you anticipated.
You also need a flashlight. It is what may end up saving your life. You need it for when it gets dark, whether you are in familiar or unfamiliar territory. This is how you see any signs of danger before it is too late.
